Afrika-Türkiye İşbirliği Platformu Başkanı Osman Genç, Türkiye ve Somali arasındaki ilişkilerin tarihi kökenlerini ve son yıllardaki gelişmelerini anlattı. Genç, Türkiye’nin Somali’de sağlık, eğitim, altyapı, güvenlik ve kalkınma alanlarında verdiği desteğin önemine vurgu yaptı. Genç, Türkiye’nin Somali’nin geleceği için önemli bir ortak olduğunu söyledi.

Osman Genç , Somali ve Türkiye arasındaki ilişkilerin 14. yüzyılda Adal Sultanlığı dönemine kadar uzandığını hatırlatarak, "Kızıldeniz'deki deniz yollarına hakim olan Portekiz sömürgecilerinin tacizinden sonra Adal Sultanlığı, Osmanlı'dan yardım istedi. Osmanlı, İslami kutsalları korumak için Somali'deki Zeyli ve Berbera limanlarının önemini anladı. Ve Osmanlılar ile Adal Sultanlığı arasındaki ilişkiler başladı. Osmanlılar, Portekiz ve İngiliz sömürgeciliğine ve Habeşistan Krallığına karşı birçok savaş veren Somali sultanlıklarına lojistik destek verdi." dedi.
Türkiye'yi, Somali'yi destekleyen diğer ülkelerden ayıranın projeleri ve sahadaki varlığı olduğuna işaret eden Genç, "Türkiye, Somali'nin kalbinde büyük bir yer edindi." ifadesini kullandı.
Osman Genç , "İki ülke arasındaki ilişkiler son yıllarda zirveye çıktı. Türkiye, Somali'nin en büyük bağışçısı ve Somali'nin en büyük ticari ortağıdır. Somali-Türkiye Meclis Dostluk Derneği, iki ülke arasındaki ilişkileri güçlendirmek için önemli bir rol oynamaktadır." diye konuştu.

Osman Genç, says that 14th century of the relations between Somalia and Turkey dates back to the period of the Adal Sultanate in the century, he said, "After the harassment of the Portuguese colonists who dominated the sea routes in the Red Sea, the Adal Sultanate asked for help from the Ottoman Empire. The Ottoman Empire understood the importance of the ports of Zeyli and Berbera in Somalia to protect the Islamic holy places. And the relations between the Ottomans and the Sultanate of Adal began. The Ottomans provided logistical support to the Somali sultanates, which fought many wars against Portuguese and British colonialism and the Kingdom of Abyssinia."
Pointing out that it is the projects and presence in the field that distinguish Turkey from other countries that support Somalia, Osman Genç said, "Turkey has gained a great place in the heart of Somalia."
Osman Genç said, "Relations between the two countries have reached their peak in recent years. Turkey is Somalia's largest donor and Somalia's largest commercial partner. The Somali-Turkish Parliamentary Friendship Association plays an important role in strengthening relations between the two countries."
Osman Genç stated that Turkey plays an important role in the development and stability of Somalia and said, "Turkey is an important partner for the future of Somalia."

Turkey has built more than 100 hospitals, schools and universities in Somalia. Turkey has also built roads, bridges and power stations in Somalia. Turkey is training security forces in Somalia and providing political and diplomatic support to the Somali government.
